Tailored Education Support Best practice educational intervention. Literacy Caloundra — Tailored Education Support aims to provide best practice intervention for students and families with learning difficulties. Tailored intervention aims at supporting students requiring additional support in literacy, as well as providing best practice for students with Specific Learning Difficulties such as dyslexia.

What is MSL? Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) builds upon scientific reading research and structured literacy by incorporating a multisensory approach. Unlike rigid programs, MSL is evidence-based and adaptable, offering direct and explicit instruction in a structured and systematic manner. It caters to individuals with dyslexia or related differences and emphasizes early intervention while remaining effective at any age. When implemented by knowledgeable educators, MSL can significantly alleviate language processing issues associated with dyslexia, and with early intervention, it may prevent significant reading and writing difficulties from emerging. The MSL Approach prioritizes language-based techniques, featuring direct and explicit instruction that is structured, sequential, cumulative, diagnostic, cognitively sound, and flexible. Its comprehensive nature and adaptability warrant the term "approach" rather than "method." Importantly, this approach fosters emotional well-being by ensuring students experience consistent success and gain confidence, making learning a fulfilling and enjoyable endeavour.

Neuroplasticity is a new discovery that proves we can change our brain. The brain is able to rewire, alter and strengthen connections and pathways when something is practiced and used often. Billions of neurons carry messages from brain, spinal cord and nerves, and back and forth. When we learn to read, we change our brain through targeted intervention and practice.

Reading is a learned skill– we are not born with it.
Reading is not a natural or intrinsic process.
Unlike oral language, there is no ready-made genetic program for learning to read.

Rather, for human-invented capacities like reading, the brain must create new circuits. It does so by recycling and connecting some aspects of older parts that are genetically programmed, like vision, language, affect (emotional feeling), and cognition. The circuit for reading emerges slowly in the brain, as each potential component part develops separately in the first five years before teaching begins. Literacy intervention is designed for any learner who is experiencing difficulty in acquiring and mastering skills in literacy. Individuals with dyslexia or those behind their peers require explicit, direct and systematic instruction in both oral and

Literacy intervention is designed for any learner who is experiencing difficulty in acquiring and mastering skills in literacy. Individuals with dyslexia or those behind their peers require explicit, direct and systematic instruction in both oral and written language. This evidenced-based practice is well supported by; The National Reading Panel, Australian Dyslexia Working Party document, National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy and the Australian Dyslexia Association. Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) includes the principles of scientific reading research but goes one step further with addition of the multisensory component. MSL it is not a program that a teacher must follow and a student ‘fit into’, but is an evidence-based approach. MSL is flexible in delivery and differs to many other traditional reading and spelling programs. Not all programs are created equal! MSL offers direct and explicit instruction delivered in a structured and systematic way. MSL assists ALL including individuals who have been identified with dyslexia or a related difference. Early intervention is best practice, although it is never too late to start.
